Rolls-Royce was a British luxury car and later aircraft engine company founded in Manchester in 1904  by  Charles Rolls and Henry Royce. Building on the reputation established by Royce cranes, they quickly established a reputation for avant-garde design, producing “the best car in the world”. The company was founded as Rolls-Royce Limited in 1906 and a new factory opened in Derby  in 1908. The First World War brought the company to the production of aircraft engines. Joint development of jet engines began in 1940 and they entered production.

Rolls-Royce has built a lasting reputation in the development and production of defense and civil aircraft engines. In the late 1960s,  the poorly managed development and resulting cost overruns of Rolls-Royce’s advanced RB211 jet engine had a negative impact, although it ultimately proved very successful. In 1971, the owners had to close their business. The useful properties were acquired by the new state-owned Rolls-Royce (1971) Limited, which continued its core business but almost immediately sold its stake in the  British Aircraft Corporation (BAC)  and relinquished ownership of the profitable but now economically irrelevant car. A division of Rolls-Royce Motors Holdings Limited which it sold to Vickers in 1980.

As the 20th century progressed, Rolls-Royce turned its attention to the development of aircraft engines, building on its expertise in power and propulsion to develop cutting-edge engines that would propel the world’s aircraft to new heights. During World War II, the company played a key role in supplying engines for military aircraft, and its engines powered some of the most important aircraft of the war, including the iconic Spitfire fighter.
