With the passage of prominence and prosperity, at the end of the eighteenth century, the country was divided into neighboring states and regained independence in 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles. After many local conflicts, the new multi-ethnic Poland has been restored as a major player in European politics. World War II began with Germany’s invasion of Poland in September 1939, followed by the Soviet Union’s invasion of Poland under the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

Six million Polish citizens, including 90% of Jews in the country, died in the war. In 1947, the Polish People’s Republic was established as a satellite state under Soviet influence. After the revolutions of 1989, with the advent of the Solidarity Movement, Poland reestablished itself as a presidential democratic republic.
